We took a day trip to the coast today. Chris has an assignment from Our State magazine to write about a restaurant called Causeway Cafe at Wrightsville Beach, so we drove down to eat there. The drive is easy, just down Interstate 40, but it takes about two hours. We got to the cafe about 10:30 or so. We had to wait for a table, but we could sit out on the porch in the cool breeze. Chris and I had seafood omelets with grits and biscuits. Very tasty! Jake had a waffle with fresh strawberries and peaches (canned, I think) on top.
We drove over to visit the USS Battleship North Carolina. We went there a long time ago, but today we saw much more of the ship. Jake enjoyed exploring the various parts. I am always a little claustrophobic in parts of the ship, but it was very interesting to read about how the guns were aimed with an analog computer. Of course, it would be a complex process to get those giant guns to hit target; I just never thought about it before. I guess it was an appropriate time to visit the battleship: on Memorial Day weekend. Reading about the sailors' experiences and seeing the close quarters that they worked and lived in reminded me what a sacrifice war is. That war -- World War II -- was worth it.
We also visited the Cotton Exchange, a shopping area on the riverfront in Wilmington. I bought a patchwork cloth bag that I can carry as a purse. It's pretty and different -- kind of bohemian style.
All in all, a pleasant trip.
