I've let this blog languish for weeks now. I need to catch up -- at least a little.
Jake is in his first semester at Wake Technical Community College. He seems to be keeping up with his work, and he has a few friends who also go to Wake Tech. He has joined a club for students who have special needs and has even been elected treasurer. He also has a new car, a 2007 Nissan Versa, which seems to be a very good car for him -- small but roomy on the inside. The one thing he needs is a part-time job, but that will happen sometime, I'm sure. He just needs to keep applying for jobs.
Chris has been busy at work, writing and copy-editing a magazine called Living in Style, published by The N&O's Display Advertising Department. He has written almost every article in each issue. He has also published a story in Our State magazine and has a couple more in the hopper. We hope that will lead to more freelance work. What he'd really like is a new job as an editor-writer, perhaps in a government agency.
I have been extremely busy at work. We don't have enough people to do the work, so I have been working longer hours. It's wearing me down, and I don't have enough energy sometimes to take care of myself or to do things I like to do outside work. I have a tendency to let work take over my life anyway, and the current situation just makes that worse. Still, I am grateful to have a job that pays well. Because I am not a supervisor now, I can make overtime. The extra money doesn't make up for having no life, but it's good to have. Now that Jake's tuition isn't so high, I feel as if we have a little breathing room.
My father's 80th birthday is coming up, Sept. 25, and we'll visit my parents next weekend. I have a special gift ready. I hope he likes it. Chris' birthday is Monday, Sept. 17, and Jake's birthday is Sept. 26.
